Roja lay across Emir, clutching what warmth she could. She didn’t know how long it had been raining, only that her dress was soaked through. The fabric stuck tightly against her shivering skin, but it didn’t matter. She never wanted to leave, never wanted to stop kissing her wonderful wretch, either. It had taken only a decade to find him. He held her in his strong arms, and Roja hadn’t felt this comfortable in a lifetime.

“I’m not taking you on this rock in the middle of a rainstorm,” he whispered.

“But it’s such a fine rock.” In the shadows she could see his grin. He wore such an attractive scowl normally. This was nicer. She hadn’t expected his passion. She felt his controlled hunger for her and took great pleasure in the prospect of further connections. How long had they kissed? Hours? Many hours? Moments? It didn’t matter. Nothing mattered but now and however long to come. The world was ending, but not tonight. The music had faded with the rainstorm, but the rain’s melody upon the river, the rock and themselves was just as beautiful. She slid on to his lap and kissed him again. It must have been hours, as her jaw ached. Wonderful pain.

His eager hands slid up and down her thighs. “Perhaps, if I found a pillow or two…” he ventured. “I could manoeuvre you into some interesting positions up here.” He dared a smile, and she truly knew this was her mate; she’d always known. She could feel his willingness and she did not slip away. They had all the time in the world. Without warning, lightning lit up the sky, followed immediately by a roar of thunder. It boomed menacingly, like a beast of war seeking prey. He flinched with fright and she giggled.

“We are on a rock in the middle of a river in the middle of the storm,” he protested, continuing to slide his hands up and down her. She could feel him shake in tandem with her own quivering, and she laughed again.

“You know much, but not lightning mechanics. We are safe enough out here, my… beautiful Emir.”

“In that case, I think we should furrow like wildlings in a cave.”

She tightened her legs around his waist, allowing her full weight to rest upon adventurous things. Nibbling on his ear, she whispered. “When you take me, it will be in silk.”

“Would you accept some coarse wool on a few strands of hay? It’s not the bed that matters; it’s the warmth.”

“Oh, but I’m so nice in silk,” she whispered, before sliding away. Rolling like a graceful goddess, she escaped his warmth and dropped from the rock. He leapt up to catch her. Silly Emir—as if I’d fall. The water shook her as she hit, and she caught her balance. A few feet above, he gasped and she reached for him, beckoning him to follow her into the freezing river below.

“Let’s go see your Alpha friends,” she hissed, and after a moment, he leapt down.
